Final -s is pronounced /s/ after voiceless sounds	After voiceless sounds the s ending is pronounced /s/ work --> works ---> work + /s/ Do not add an extra syllable.
Final -s is pronounced /z/ after voiced sounds	After voiced sounds the s ending is pronounced /z/ Play --> plays --> play + /z/ Do not add an extra syllable.
(exception) Final -s and -es are pronounced /ez/ (or /iz/) after sh,ch,s,z,-ge, and -dge sounds	These sounds are exceptions to the rule. Final -s and -es are pronounced /ez/ after sh,ch,s,z,ge, and dge sounds. When you add this pronunciation you have to add a syllable. For example: badges = badge/ez/. badge = 1 syllable /ez/ = 1 syllable. badges = 2 syllables.
